FSC certification prepares Papua forest concession for exports to Australia and Japan
PRESS RELEASE – Jakarta, 22 August 2017
On August 8, 2017 PT Jati Dharma Indah Plywood Industries (JDI) became the fourth Papua forest concession to meet the highest international accreditation standard in forest management as issued by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). Along the way towards certification, JDI company received support mostly from Wana Aksara institute and WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) program. Specific funding for the high conservation values study was provided by The Borneo Initiative, a Dutch foundation that promotes certified forest management to counter forest loss and degradation in Indonesia. JDI company is now the 24th forest concession to achieve FSC-certification with financial assistance from The Borneo Initiative.
JDI is a forest concession of 139,470 ha located in Nabire Disctrict of Papua Province. As other FSC-certified forest concessions, it is a model how nature conservation, community services and employment creation can go hand in hand. The concession provides services to four communities with 78 households, and offers employment to 394 staff and workers. Its forest area (139,470 ha) offers habitat to a number of endemic wildlife species such as the critically endangered Western long-beaked Echidna (Zaglossus bruijnii), the Grizzled tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus inustus), the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius), Palm cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus), or the Twelve-wired Bird-of-paradise (Seleucidis melanoleuca).
JDI is linked to Sinar Wijaya Plywood Industry (SWPI) that already manages one other FSC certified concession in West Papua (PT Wijaya Sentosa – 130,755 ha). JDI produces around 120,000 cu.m. of logs annually, mostly Merbau and mixed Dipterocarp species. Currently most of the products are sold to Middle East and US. After obtaining the FSC certificate, SWPI could also expand its market to Australia and Japan. As stated by Mr Sugijanto Soewadi, Corporate Sustainability Director: “FSC-certification is an important global market instrument, recognized for its balancing of forest production with environmental and social aspects. FSC is part of SWPI’s comprehensive business strategy, both for management improvement and for consistent commitment towards sustainability of the forest resources. FSC certification helps us to improve the company’s image as regards environmental and social responsibility, and for prioritization of the workers’ health and safety conditions.”
The Borneo Initiative is a non-governmental program that aims to counter forest degradation and forest loss in Indonesia via the promotion of responsible forest management, following the standard set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). JDI’s certification brings the total FSC certified forest area supported by The Borneo Initiative to 2,324,185 ha. With inclusion of five Controlled Wood certificates (333,265 ha), The Borneo Initiative has facilitated the certification of a total forest area of 2,647,350 ha.
As a country, Indonesia now has 38 FSC certificates with 3,028,176 ha certified forests, and 7 controlled wood certificates with 2,826,948 ha.
