Why sustainable forestry is so important

Our world depends on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Forests provide habitats for plants and animals and protect our water supplies. Too many forests have been stripped bare of their resources.

The solution for the management of tropical rainforests is two-fold. In the first place we want to conserve intact forests through sustainable forest management practices, including FSC certification. Secondly, we support the restoration of degraded forests by replanting, involving forest management companies, communities and local government

Impact... Engagement.... Hope... Future.

The Borneo Initiative is an entrepreneurial NGO. We connect forest management companies, communities and local government to ensure the long-term survival of nature. Our core values are:

IMPACT We bring in professional management and hands-on solutions.

Engagement We engage with forest communities to create a viable economic plan and make them part of our success.

Hope We want to inform and educate young people about sustainable forestry. So, they can pass our message to future generations.

Future If we work together, we can build a better future where all forests are sustainably managed. Nature, forest communities and companies can all thrive.

From 2008 to 2018 The Borneo Initiative managed to turn 3 million hectares of tropical rainforests throughout Indonesia into sustainably managed FSC certified forest concessions. Guaranteeing biodiversity, conservation areas and the livelihood of animals and local communities. Since 2018 we have moved to phase 2; extending our work to the restoration of degraded forests.
