Why sustainable forestry is so important
Our world depends on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Forests provide habitats for plants and animals and protect our water supplies. Too many forests have been stripped bare of their resources.
The solution for the management of tropical rainforests is two-fold. In the first place we want to conserve intact forests through sustainable forest management practices, including FSC certification. Secondly, we support the restoration of degraded forests by replanting, involving forest management companies, communities and local government

Our track record
From 2008 to 2018 The Borneo Initiative managed to turn 3 million hectares of tropical rainforests throughout Indonesia into sustainably managed FSC certified forest concessions. Guaranteeing biodiversity, conservation areas and the livelihood of animals and local communities. Since 2018 we have moved to phase 2; extending our work to the restoration of degraded forests.

2020Start of forest restoration activities in Kalimantan and study on new revenue streams in forest management in Papua, Kalimantan and Sumatra

Our team
Robbert Jan Dekker – Board member. Owner of Royal Dekker. Robbert Jan Dekker was previously also chairman of the board of FSC Netherlands and is strongly committed to the (re)plantation of 120 million trees in depleted forests in Indonesia, as well as expanding the area of FSC certified tropical rainforest under The Borneo Initiative programme.

Dr. Ir. Boen M. Purnama – Advisory Board Member. Dr. Boen is a graduate from Bogor University who worked in forest management throughout his career. As a lecturer and former Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, he spans governance and academia. Currently, he is Chairman of Sarana Wana Jaya Foundation, an advisor to the Association of Indonesian Forest Concessionaires (APHI) and a Board of Trustee member to the Indonesian Wildlife Conservation Foundation.

Rahardjo Benyamin – Advisory Board Member. Mr Rahardjo ledsoem of the very first FSC certification trajectories for the companies he was leading at that time. Through this work he became a trusted advisor to TBI right from the start and he remains very actively involved. His vast network allows Mr Rahardjo to support sustainable forest management throughout Indonesia. Sustaianble forest management requires enhanced management capacities, and this is very much in line with TBI’s vision and mission.
Ir. Soegiyanto – Advisory Board Member. Coming from a forestry family, Mr. Sugijanto has been working in forest management for over 30years. Currently serve as the Board of Director of Asco Prima Nusantara,Ltd. and Papua Hutan Lestari Makmur,Ltd. “My hope is that TBI can introduce business models for the sector that can solve poverty problems in forest communities”.
Untung Iskandar – Advisory Board Member. Dr Untung is a graduate from Gadjah Mada University and holds a Ph.D from the University of Wahsington, Seattle. Following a career in governance and academia he recently authored a series of books on forest resources management. Dr Untung joined the Advisory Board of TBI in 2015 to ensure that “forest management is not about producing as much timber as possible but rather to develop the prosperity of society as a whole”.
